EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW OF FAMPh WITH TFW TIMES
Q: Congratulations on the spectacular showcase at Thailand Fashion Week SS25! How was the experience of presenting a fusion of designs by various Filipino talents from FAMPh on such a prestigious international platform?
A. It was an incredibly rewarding experience for the Philippine delegation to present a fusion of Philippine craftsmanship & heritage, which allowed us to showcase a 15-piece collection representing the rich artistry & ingenuity of our Fashion Accessory Brands i.e. Agsam Fashion Fern, Alchemista, Aranaz, Beatriz, Maco Custodio, Strozzi & Vesti, and Apparel Brands i.e. Jor-el Espina, Jun Escario & Pablo Cabahug. With a beautiful narrative to tell, while also blending it with the global influence of other Asian designs, it was a beautiful celebration of cultural exchange & newfound friendships, and how fashion can be a universal language that transcends borders.
Q: Your collection celebrated the richness and diversity of Filipino culture. What was the core message you wanted to convey through this fusion of styles and aesthetics?
A. Cultural Pride & Global Storytelling Through our Collection, we wanted to highlight the pride and resilience of the Filipino people. Our fashion accessories & apparels are a tribute to the artisans, crafts and cultural narratives that are passed down through generations. It aimed to show that Philippine heritage is not just something rooted in the past, but a living and evolving part of our story. And via this global stage, it can further amplify Philippine culture, spark conversation and appreciation for the artistry and creativity inherent in our Philippine roots.
Q: With so many different designers contributing, how did you ensure that the collection felt cohesive while showcasing each designer’s unique talents?
A. Shared Vision & Diverse Execution Our Collection was established from a shared vision from the very beginning i.e. one that’s centered on celebrating Philippine heritage while allowing each Philippine Designer to express their individual creative inputs. While each Designer brought their unique approach, from modern take on indigenous fabric to experimental designs, the underlying theme of cultural pride and craftsmanship served as a unifying factor. This balance of unity and individuality created a collection that was diverse yet cohesive.
Q: What inspired the mix of materials and techniques in the fashion accessories presented, and how do they reflect Filipino craftsmanship?
A. Celebrating Philippine Craftsmanship Through Material Diversity. The inspiration behind the mix of materials and techniques in the collection came from the incredible diversity of Philippine craftsmanship across the archipelago. From the intricate beadwork of the Cordilleras to the vibrant, handwoven textiles of Visayas & Mindanao, and the exquisite craftsmanship from Luzon, we wanted to highlight the wide array of indigenous materials and skills that are deeply rooted in Philippine heritage & culture. By combining traditional materials like abaca, piña, capiz or inabel with modern elements like metal or crystal accents, pearls or sustainable fabrics, we created a fusion that honors the rich history of Philippine craftsmanship while making it relevant to today’s fashion global landscape.
Q: What was the most rewarding aspect of participating in Thailand Fashion Week, and how did the audience’s reaction influence your perspective on the collection?
A. The Power of Cultural Representation and Connection Participating in Thailand Fashion Week was incredibly rewarding because it allowed the Philippine designers to be part of a global conversation on fashion, culture and artistry, apart from the vast queries from potential Buyers/Partners. The audience's reaction, particularly their fascination with our intricate craftsmanship and heritage-rich materials, shows growing appreciation for Philippine design & crafts. It was a good reminder of the power of Design to bridge cultures and create meaningful connections.
Q: Would FAMPh like to return to Thailand Fashion Week next season? If so, are there any new themes or ideas you’re excited to explore in your next presentation?
A. Collaborative Approach with Designers/Artisans across the Philippines A resounding YES to again participate at TFW next season! FAMPh has 48 members in its roster. And we’re excited to collaborate with more Designers/Artisans from different Philippine regions to showcase the variety and richness of our local crafts, and perhaps focus on sustainable practices. From the beadwork of the Visayas to the intricate weaving traditions of Mindanao & Luzon, each region has its own unique cultural expression, with a unique & authentic story to tell. This collaborative approach will allow us to present a truly dynamic and culture-rich collection which would represent both Philippine pride and global innovation.
Q: The diversity in your collection was stunning. How do you work with multiple designers to curate a collection that represents the breadth of Filipino talent and creativity?
A. Celebrating Regional Diversity and Craftsmanship Working with multiple designers is an exciting opportunity to highlight the diverse regions and traditions of the Philippines. Each Designer often draws inspiration from their hometowns e.g. the intricate weaving from Visayas region or the vibrant beadwork from Mindanao. Each Designer brings their regional influences to the forefront while maintaining an overall sense of unity. By curating materials, techniques and colors that reflect various Philippine culture, our Collection not only celebrates the vast creative potential of the Philippines but also tells a cohesive story of our heritage and innovation.
Q: What challenges did you face when organizing a Collection that involved so many different designers and styles, and how did you overcome them?
A. Logistics and Production Challenges Coordinating the logistics for a Collection involving numerous designers, each with production timelines, materials and techniques, was a significant challenge. The production process & stock availability had to be well-planned to ensure that everything arrived on time and met the quality standards expected at Thailand Fashion Week. To overcome this, we set clear deadlines and worked closely with each Designer to monitor progress. By staying organized and responsive, we were able to deliver a cohesive Collection in time for TFW.
Q: How do you see Filipino fashion accessories gaining more global recognition, and what role do you believe FAMPh plays in that growth?
A. Telling our Filipino Story Through Design Apart from expanding global partnerships and network, the growing recognition of Philippine fashion accessories lies in the increasing demand for aesthetically-stunning, culture-rich yet wearable, and with a beautiful narrative to tell. The beautiful fashion accessories we create carry stories of Philippine history, artistry and identity, which resonate with global consumers’ preference for authentic and personal connections with the products they buy. FAMPh plays a critical role by curating and presenting Collections that are not only aesthetically-beautiful but also rooted on heritage and sustainability.
Q: What’s next for FAMPh? Are there any upcoming collaborations, new projects, or collections that we can look forward to seeing in the future?
A. 2025 will be another busy year for FAMPh as we expand global collaborations by working with international designers to merge Philippine craftsmanship with sustainable practices. We shall continue to forge partnerships via fashion shows, joining international fashion weeks & domestic/foreign trade shows. While in the backburner for some time, we shall resume our digital innovation plan, as we create virtual showrooms and exhibitions with international e-commerce platforms to bring Philippine-made fashion accessories to a global audience. As to our artisan workers, our pipeline projects include upskilling artisans, allowing them to incorporate modern design trends into their traditional work.
